Proposal for F: Presskit jam

edited in General
OK guys, so I've said this so many times that I think it's time we just DO IT :)

TLDR:
1. Press page. Do you have one? If not, you should.
2. Make one. (http://dopresskit.com/)
3. Comment and feedback on at least 2 other people's eventual presskit
4. That is all.

What is Presskit and why do I need it?

Presskit makes press pages easily. A press page is an easy-to-access page that contains all the information the press to write about you and/or your game. If you're to have any measure of success with your game, having a press page is a good thing. Of course, if you're not planning on going public with anything at all, you don't need one. But we ALL eventually should have a public face, so it's a good exercise to go through. It also saves you time sending your information to people, it's better than typing everything up every time.

Get Presskit

Presskit is Vlambeer's Rami Ismail's baby, and it helps you do press so you can focus on making games instead of making press. Not only is it easy to set up, it does the very important job of prompting you to put the right things in your presskit (making it is only the smaller half the job, knowing what to put in it is the bigger half)

The install process is pretty fairly painless and self-explanatory (all you gotta do is make a /press directory in your server and stick the "install.php" file in it, and run it) but here's the manual - it contains some good prompts for what content to put in, too: http://dopresskit.com/manual.pdf

Examples of good pressskits:

This was especially top of mind for me cos I was making my own ones:

http://www.tuism.com/press

And Gobbo Games had shown their own not so long ago:

Cool guys, if the Inner Council accepts this proposal then this can be comp F :P otherwise I just hope everyone will do it anyway cos it's a good thing to learn and you really should do it anyway :)

  • I think this is a super good idea. I'm gonna need one pretty soon for Dark Rabbit Games anyway ;)

I've just been through this process. I actually contributed a bug fix to the do presskit source code. (You can thank me with beer :P )

I found the biggest challenge to be getting the tone of one's writing correct. Otherwise do presskit is pretty awesome - even if half the people writing about cadence missed it completely. Doh!

Edit: Eh carp, my website be down...

Edit Edit: Okay, nobody move. It seems to be back up again... don't touch it and back away very slowly...
  • @raxter: Good job on the press kit. Don't forget a logo and icon for 6x Mass Production. :)

@TheFuntastic: hehehehe ... fix the site ... fix the site. :P

@quintond Thanks dude! Yeah would love a logo! But I'm just one dude paying for artist's time out of my own (rather light) pocket; right now in-game assets take priority ;) ... I could fudge an icon and logo from what I got now (but then again I need to fix bugs!) ... devving this in my spare time does have it's distinct drawbacks I'm discovering :p

[edit] to clarify, the artist I'm working with is currently working for equity... kinda becoming a partner in the whole thing :D but we are both busy as all hell with other jobs so priorities are err prioritised...
  • Hey guys and girls who's used presskit, I was looking at the <monetization-permission> feature, which gives your press page a bit that says youtubers can make videos with your game, and I couldn't get it to work. I've put the tag in:

    <monetization-permission>TRUE</monetization-permission>

And I've tried various places, after <press-can-request-copy>, after everything, as the last thing before </game>, nothing works... Did anyone get this one to work?

@TheFuntastic - If you are referring to your NAG magazine feature, I would just like to note that I found it extremely helpful and insightful (especially the part about marketing your game). Also, I think it is really cool that the magazine has decided to give more page space to their "home coded" section.

  • Hey guys, if you have a moment, could you have a look at Twoplus Games' Presskit? I'd appreciate some feedback on it as Bear Chuck and Dead Run are off to A MAZE in Berlin and this is pretty much what I have for anyone who's following up on the game online :)

    Thanks guys!
